ASSOCIATION FOR SCIENCE IN AUTISM TREATMENT
- ABA is recognised as a scientifically researched and proven method of treating autistic children
- The research into ABA is extensive, substantial, and goes back over a long period of years.
- ABA methods and research are peer reviewed.
- Each ABA programme is individally designed to meet the specific needs of the child. There is as much variation in the skills, abilities and needs of children with ASDs as their is among other children, and this individual variation means that each programme MUST be tailored to the individual child.
- Each individual programme therefore must be regularly adjusted to meet the changing needs of the child. This must be done through thorough and regular reassessment and re-evaluation of the child's progress
Recently there has been substantial debate surrounding the appropriateness of various approaches to the treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders.
ATAC has been directly involved in this debate which arose out of erroneous representations and downright lies about the use of ABA [Applied Behavioural Analyis] in the treatment of children with ASDs. Allegations made in State Parliament have absolutely NO FOUNDATION in reality, and are simply a tissue of lies and obfuscations used to attack the proposed use of ABA [Lovaas Method] within the State Education Department. It is well known that ATAC supports and lobbies for the use of ABA in the treatment of children with ASDs. Our support is based upon the following
NO OTHER METHOD OF TREATMENT HAS BEEN SUBJECTED TO AS MUCH RESEARCH AND EVALUATION AS HAS ABA. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE FOR THE BARRAGE OF LIES AND DISTORTIONS THAT HAVE BEEN THE CENTRE OF RECENT PARLIAMENTARY ALLEGATIONS
ATAC has provided links on this page to The Association for Science in Autism Treatment to help clarify the issues in this debate. This web site evaluates a ll known methods of treating autism, and lists the research carried out on each method. It evaluates the nature and the quality of this research.
Among the methods mentioned in current debate have been SON-RISE FLOORTIME and TEACCH Direct links to each of these methods gives the evaluation of ASAT, and this will enable you to form your own opinion about the effectiveness of these methods.
